Most of the casualties buried here lost their lives when a troopship, the S.S. Lancastria, with about 5,000 men aboard was bombed and sunk by the enemy off St. Nazaire on 17th June, 1940. Originally two American airmen were also buried in this cemetery, but their remains were exhumed by the U.S. Army authorities in 1949 for re-burial in an American cemetery.
